Biography
Stacey Cavanagh is a seasoned trial attorney and partner at Cavanagh Sorich Law Group, bringing more than 25 years of experience litigating complex and high-profile personal injury cases. Her practice focuses on catastrophic injury and wrongful death cases, including medical malpractice, product liability and premises liability. Known for her strategic insight and compassionate client advocacy, Cavanagh has successfully represented individuals and families in impactful cases.
Before joining the firm in 2009, Cavanagh was a partner at a prominent Chicago law firm, where she gained invaluable experience representing both plaintiffs and defendants. Her dual-perspective background gives her a unique advantage in the courtroom. She has been honored on the National Trial Lawyers Top 100 list, named to the Illinois Super Lawyers list, and recognized by Lawdragon as one of the 500 Leading Plaintiff Consumer Lawyers in the country.
Cavanagh’s litigation accomplishments include a landmark case involving the death of a United Airlines baggage handler, who suffered a fatal fall at a U.S. military base in Kuwait. Cavanagh was a member of the team that secured a $6.65 million jury verdict for the family after moving the case from the Persian Gulf region to Cook County Circuit Court. The case garnered national attention and highlighted the firm’s skill in addressing international jurisdictional challenges.
In another highly publicized case, Cavanagh was part of the litigation team that obtained a $20 million settlement against the City of Chicago after a drunk, off-duty police officer with a history of alcohol-related incidents caused a fiery crash killing two young men. The team uncovered critical evidence that initially had been withheld by the city, compelling the Chicago Police Department to address its long-standing “code of silence” in shielding officers from accountability.
“What I truly enjoy is working with people and representing them, whatever their legal needs may be,” Cavanagh says.
She earned her B.A. in English from Boston College and her J.D. from IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law, where she received American Jurisprudence Awards in both Conflicts of Law and Advanced Legal Research. She is admitted to practice in Illinois, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, and the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals.
Cavanagh is proud to be a member of numerous professional associations including the Chicago Bar Association, Illinois State Bar Association, American Bar Association, Illinois Trial Lawyers Association, and the Women’s Bar Association of Illinois.
Beyond her legal work, Cavanagh is committed to her community. She and her husband, Tim Cavanagh, support numerous charities including the Guild Board of the Boys & Girls Club of Chicago and the Evans Scholars Foundation.
Cavanagh is the proud mother of six children.
