R. Emmett Harrington

Associate Attorney

Biography

Emmett Harrington is an associate attorney at Cavanagh Sorich Law Group. After initially working in the legal field as a clerk at a civil defense firm, he felt a call to switch to the plaintiff side to advocate for injured clients.

In his three years at CSLG, Emmett has worked closely with partners Tim Cavanagh and Michael Sorich on cases involving catastrophic personal injuries — notably those concerning premises liability, product liability, trucking liability, and railroad liability. In January 2022, Emmett assisted Cavanagh and Sorich in the trial preparation for a client seriously injured in a truck crash in Wisconsin. The case settled for a county-record $4.125 million on the eve of trial.

More recently, in June 2022, he assisted Sorich in a trial against the City of Chicago for a cyclist injured by an on-duty Chicago police officer. The jury returned a verdict for $2.25 million.  In March 2023, Emmett assisted CSLG partner Jason Kroot with a complex month-long legal malpractice trial. The trial resulted in a $1 million verdict.

In addition to getting results for injured clients, Emmett has worked on several CSLG research projects for the Illinois Trial Lawyers association, including presentations on construction law, discovery law and a published chapter on patient liability within medical malpractice cases.

Emmett’s passion for advocating for injured clients has extended beyond his work at the firm. While clerking at Cavanagh Sorich Law Group full-time, Emmett earned his J.D. from Loyola University Chicago School of Law, with a certificate in Advocacy. At Loyola, he was also a member of the law school’s student-run podcast, the Podvocate, where he interviewed judges, politicians and numerous legal professionals from around the country about pressing issues of law.

In his free time, Emmett can be found on the weekends around his neighborhood in the South Loop and along the lakefront trail, training for the upcoming Chicago Marathon.
