Jason Kroot

Partner

Biography

“At all times, you have to think quickly about the now and what’s coming around the next curve,” says Jason M. Kroot, partner at Cavanagh Sorich Law Group and longtime amateur auto racer. He sees clear parallels between his two passions, racing and advocating for victims of personal injury and medical malpractice.

For more than two decades, Kroot has built a reputation for tireless advocacy and meticulous case preparation. His work has resulted in some of the most significant personal injury verdicts and settlements in Illinois. He secured a record-setting $16.3 million Cook County verdict in an anesthesia malpractice case, and, alongside partners Tim Cavanagh and Mike Sorich, obtained a $12.5 million settlement for an Illinois man who suffered a disabling stroke after being taken off a critical medication.

“Our client is substantially paralyzed and will be in a wheelchair for life,” Kroot said. “His wife had to leave her job to become his full-time caregiver. This settlement will provide them with the high-quality, 24/7 care they need moving forward and the freedom to do the things they’ve always wanted to do.”

While Kroot concentrates on medical malpractice—widely regarded as one of the most challenging areas of personal injury law—his practice also includes auto accidents, premises liability, product liability, and construction injury cases.

One of his most heart-wrenching cases involved the death of a 13-year-old girl who suffered a fatal allergic reaction to peanuts after being served takeout food by her teacher. Despite asking about allergens, a language barrier with the restaurant led to a miscommunication that turned tragic. “The case still makes me extremely sad for the family. No one ever recovers from losing a child,” Kroot said. “But it raised awareness about the dangers of food allergies in schools and helped spark improved safety measures in many districts.”

Kroot earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Texas at Austin in 1995 and graduated from IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law in 1999. At Kent, he received CALI Excellence for the Future Awards in Trial Advocacy I and II and successfully competed on the school’s national student Trial Advocacy Team. He has been recognized as an Illinois Leading Lawyer and is an active member of the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association.

In 2003, he achieved national recognition when he became one of the youngest lawyers ever included in Who’s Who In American Law. Before joining Cavanagh Sorich Law Group, Kroot managed the medical malpractice department of one of the largest personal injury firms in the Midwest, where he obtained multimillion-dollar results in complex tort cases. Over the course of his career, Kroot has practiced in county, federal and state courts, including several in Indiana and Wisconsin. He has experience with multi-state litigation and has earned a reputation for establishing strong professional relationships with judges, physicians, expert witnesses, and his clients.

Throughout his career, Kroot has been honored with distinctions such as the Lawdragon 500 Leading Plaintiff Consumer Lawyer Award and the Illinois Leading Lawyer Award.

Outside the courtroom, Kroot is a dedicated father of two teenagers. Most weekends are spent shuttling between softball, soccer and basketball games. Though his he has less time to spend on the track, he still competes in time trial events throughout the Midwest. “I’ve raced across California and the Midwest,” he says. “These days, I’m mostly on tracks with street vehicles, aiming for the fastest lap time. Before having kids, I raced wheel-to-wheel through organizations like the SCCA.”

Kroot brings the same focus, speed, and precision to the courtroom as he does to the track, always thinking a step ahead, always driving toward the best possible outcome. “In auto racing and in the courtroom, you spot the dangers ahead, but you keep your focus firmly on the direction you want to go,” Kroot said.
