Cavanagh Sorich Law Group has obtained record-breaking victories in Chicago and across the United States for more than two decades. In 2002, the firm secured a landmark $55 million verdict in an Illinois railroad crossing case after an eight-million-pound train traveling 50 mph slammed into a family’s car — severely and permanently injuring everyone inside the vehicle. The crossing gates and lights were malfunctioning at the time, and a dispatcher erroneously told train operators the crossing was clear. The case set a state record and was recognized by the National Law Journal as one of the top 100 verdicts in the country in 2002.
We successfully challenged the Chicago Police Department’s “code of silence” with a historic $20 million result in 2018. In that case, an off-duty Chicago police detective with a history of intoxicated driving killed two men while driving drunk in 2009. He had long been protected by his fellow officers and shielded from any serious consequences. Cavanagh Sorich Law Group proved police aren’t above the law. The case encapsulates a sea change in how liability cases are handled for all those who wear the Chicago police uniform. No longer are the actions of an off-duty officer of no concern to the city. Today, victims’ families can seek justice and win.
